Chasing a Rare Lunar Standstill Moonrise at Weaver’s Needle: Arizona Landscape Photography Adventure

Sometimes the best photography adventures are unplanned. Recently, I set out on a spontaneous hike to capture a rare moonrise event linked to the lunar standstill—a phenomenon that occurs roughly every 18.6 years. My destination was the iconic Weaver’s Needle in the Superstition Mountains near Apache Trail, Arizona.

What Is a Lunar Standstill?

A lunar standstill happens when the Moon’s orbit reaches its maximum tilt relative to Earth’s equator, causing the Moon to rise and set at its northernmost or southernmost points on the horizon. This cycle, caused by the 18.6-year precession of the Moon’s orbital nodes, creates extraordinary moonrises and moonsets that are perfect for landscape photography.

There are two types of lunar standstills:

  • Major Lunar Standstill: The Moon’s declination range is at its greatest, producing the most dramatic moonrises and moonsets.

  • Minor Lunar Standstill: The Moon’s declination range is at its least, with less extreme positions.

Capturing a moonrise during a major lunar standstill is a rare opportunity that happens only about once every two decades.

Hiking to Weaver’s Needle for the Perfect Shot

After discovering this rare event, I researched vantage points and chose the west side of Weaver’s Needle, near the Apache Trail highway leading to Canyon Lake. The hike was challenging but rewarding, and along the way, I noticed bats feeding near the cliffs—a beautiful reminder of nature’s presence.

Photography Setup and Capturing the Moonrise

At the top, I set up my gear to capture both 360-degree footage and still images. When the Moon rose behind Weaver’s Needle, it created an incredible silhouette against a glowing lunar backdrop.

I decided against doing a time-lapse to avoid risking missing the perfect moment, opting instead for timed shots with careful adjustments to composition as the Moon moved behind the rock formation.

By zooming in and using timed exposures, I captured stunning details of the Moon and the landscape, producing what may be the best photograph of my career.

The Unique Challenge of Landscape and Night Photography

In today’s digital age, where almost everyone has a camera, it’s not just the equipment but the effort, vision, and timing that make a photo truly special. This adventure reaffirmed my passion for pushing creative and physical boundaries to capture once-in-a-lifetime moments.
